FASCINATION STATION

Recognizing the need to encourage discovery of the wonders of the universe, it is the mission of the Fascination Station to expand people's horizons and stimulate their childlike curiosity about science and the Arts. From a center near Ottumwa, Iowa programs and exhibits provide a resource for hands on exploration in an entertaining environment.

The Fascination Station is a private non-profit organization. Since relocating to Pioneer Ridge in January 1998 the Fascination Station does not maintain regular weekend hours for visitors. Instead the Fascination Station now specializes in field trips for elementary school classes and youth organizations, and overnights for cub scouts and girls scouts. All activities at the Fascination Station are led by volunteers. The Fascination Station receives no tax support and is funded by program fees only, so a nominal fee of $1.00 per person is charged for field trips and special programs. A $7.00 fee is charged for an overnight.

The Fascination Station schedules special activities during times when children are not in school, such as having a planetarium program during Christmas vacation. Day camps or a short overnight camp may be offered during the summer. Watch the Ottumwa Courier for announcements of special activities.

To put more school children in touch with hands on science activities the Fascination Station has developed classroom kits which can be rented for two weeks by teachers. Each kit contains all the materials necessary for a class of 30 students to explore an area of science. Presently we have kits on electricity and simple machines available. Rental fee of $25.00 per week includes a staff person to get you started.

In the future the Fascination Station may establish a web site where children can find hands on science activities to do at home.
